Special thanks to our friend Marguerita Thalia for providing us with pictures from the event.

The all-new Chevrolet Corvette C7 Stingray has made its official local debut in Lebanon in an exclusive launch ceremony at the IMPEX showroom in Badaro, Beirut. The event was attended by a select number of politicians, socialites and high ranking industry leaders.

Powered by a 6.2-liter LT1 V8 engine, the new Corvette Stingray is the most powerful standard model ever, with 450 horsepower and 610 Nm of torque. It is also the most capable standard model ever, able to accelerate from 0-100 km/h in less than 4 seconds.

The 2014 Corvette Stingray incorporates an all-new frame structure and chassis, a new powertrain and supporting technologies, as well as completely new exterior and interior designs. It shares only two parts with the previous generation Corvette.

IMPEX, the exclusive Chevrolet and Cadillac distributor in Lebanon, seized the opportunity to also unveil the luxurious new Cadillac CTS to the crowd.

Although it is bigger in size compared to its predecessor, the all-new CTS sedan has a lower curb weight. Lightweight features, including Cadillac’s first aluminum door structures, contribute to the lower weight and a nearly 50/50 weight balance. And for the first time on CTS, Magnetic Ride Control, Cadillac’s real-time damping system, is available on base models.

The 2014 CTS is available with a 2.0L turbocharged engine rated at 272 horsepower and paired with a six-speed automatic transmission. A naturally aspirated 3.6L V6 is also offered; it produces an estimated 321 horsepower and is matched with a new paddle-shift eight-speed automatic in rear-wheel-drive models (or six-speed automatic with all-wheel drive).

Christopher Njeim has won the first round of the 2014 Lebanese Karting Championship at the Pit Stop Karting circuit in Zouk this afternoon. Njeim qualified on pole in the Junior class and won both pre-final and final races after a dominant performance.

“I’m looking forward to the upcoming races,” said Njeim after the race, “This race was easy, but I’m expecting a bigger challenge in the next races. Christophe spun out today so I pulled a comfortable gap but I expect him to put more pressure in the upcoming rounds.”

Christophe Rizk, who was Njeim’s closest pursuers, spun out in the early parts of the race and dropped back from second to last. However, a magnificent performance saw him salvage P3 in the end.

A disappointed Christophe said: “I had a problem with my brakes so I spun out; the problem was persistent throughout the race but I managed to finish third. I would’ve gotten at least second place if it weren’t for the problem.”

Second place ultimately went to Kevin Kanaan who drove consistently behind Christopher Njeim. Kanaan was thrilled to be on the podium in the opening round of the championship; he said: “Everything was great today, but I will try to improve even further in the next round. I benefited from Christophe’s spin today, and I need more experience to be able to challenge these guys regularly.”

2014 Lebanese Karting Championship – Round 1 Results – Max

Matthias Njeim emerged as the winner of the Max category in the first round of the 2014 Lebanese Karting Championship following an exciting four-way battle for the lead between himself, Samer Mattar, Karl Massaad and older brother Patrick Njeim.

Samer Mattar qualified on pole and fended off heavy pressure from Karl Massaad during the pre-final race to claim victory, but an off moment on the first lap of the final race saw him drop to last position, leaving Matthias Njeim, Patrick Njeim and Karl Massaad in the fight for the win.

Race leader Matthias Njeim was then chased by Karl Massaad, but the latter spun while trying to overtake, thus dropping to fifth place. It was then Patrick Njeim’s turn to put pressure on his brother, but he was unable to overtake. Matthias eventually clinched the final race victory, followed by his brother Patrick in P2, and a resurgent Karl Massaad in P3.

“Samer had new tyres on in the final race, and the tyres usually have a layer that’s very slippery, so I touched him a little  bit and he went off, although it wasn’t my intention. Karl [Massaad] was very fast, and I thought he was going to win the race easily, but then he tried passing me on the inside [of turn 4], which is very dusty, and he spun.” said Matthias in a post-race interview.

Matthias-Njeim-and-Karl-Massaad

Patrick Njeim endured a tough weekend; he was disqualified from qualifying because the rear end of his car was half a centimeter too wide, but a fourth place in the pre-final race paved the way for a great second place in the final race.

Patrick said: ”We got new engines just last week and we had one testing session under the rain, so we couldn’t really tune them up and we’re still struggling with lack of power. It was good race; the greatest competition was Karl who passed me after the third lap, but he spun out and I was able to pass him. In the last few laps I caught up with my brother but I couldn’t overtake.”

Karl Massaad was arguably the fastest man on track in the final race, but an early spin put him out of contention for the win; the young driver told Biser3a.com: “I was fastest the whole time. I tried passing Matthias but he stayed tight; I couldn’t pass him and I spun, so then Joey [Hajj], Karl [Khadra] and Patrick [Njeim] passed me, then I re-overtook Joey and Karl. I was still fastest but they [Matthias and Patrick] were too far ahead.”

The Automobile and Touring Club of Lebanon (ATCL) has published the itinerary for the 2014 Spring Rally.

As the opening round of the 2014 Lebanese Rally Championship, the Spring Rally will feature three loops, with each loop consisting of two special stages: a 15.42-kilometer stage in Nahr Ibrahim (SS1, SS3, SS5) and a 17.36-kilometer stage in Blat (SS2, SS4, SS6), which brings the total special stage count to six. Nahr Ibrahim and Blat are very popular stages among Lebanese rally enthusiasts as they have been part of the championship calendar for many years.

Action starts on the morning of Sunday, 30th of March at 7:30 AM, and concludes in the afternoon with cars crossing the finish line prior to a podium ceremony at 03:42 PM.

Abdo Feghali won last year’s edition of the event after a superb performance that saw him dominate all of the special stages and ultimately clinch victory by a comfortable margin.

2014 Lebanese Karting Championship – Round 2 Results – Max

Patrick Njeim took his first win of the 2014 Lebanese Karting Championship season during the second round  at the Pit Stop Karting Circuit in Zouk this afternoon. Patrick qualified on pole and managed to claim victory in both pre-final and final races.

He said: “I lead the whole time in the pre-final race; I wasn’t fastest, but I was trying to keep my time constant and it worked out. I had some pressure but it was fine. We started on a new set of tyres in the final race, and I managed to preserve them in the warm-up so I had a quick lap after the start which gave me sort of a good gap to keep me in front. I was struggling a bit with oversteer, but I just trying to keep my time constant and it worked out well.”

Winner of the first round Matthias Njeim enjoyed another successful weekend, finishing second behind his older brother and successfully defending his position from a surging Karl Massaad.

“I got past Karl [Massaad] in the pre-final race, and I had to defend my position throughout the race so Patrick and Samer [Mattar] pulled away and I finished third. Patrick, Karl and I changed tyres for the final race, so we had a bit more pace. All in all, I’m pleased with the result.” commented Matthias.

Karl Massaad endured a tough pre-final race as he collided with Joey Hajj and ended up last, but Massaad shone through in the final race, overtaking Michael Kanaan, Joey Hajj and Samer Mattar, to finish third, closely behind Matthias Njeim.

Karl explained: “I got the lead of the pre-final race on the first corner, and then I had a problem with the carburetor because Patrick hit me; the carburetor kept popping the whole time and it wasn’t working whenever I hit the throttle. In the final race, I passed Joey, Michael and Samer and I stayed behind Matthias till the end of the race.”

A collision with Karl Massaad in the pre-final race and poor grip in the final race saw Joey Hajj ultimately finish fifth behind Samer Mattar and ahead of rookie Michael Kanaan.

Christopher Njeim secured his second victory of the 2014 Lebanese Karting Championship during the second round of the season at the Pit Stop Circuit in Zouk. The youngest of the Njeim brothers dominated the event by winning both the pre-final and final races.

After committing a couple of errors in the pre-final race, he drove a flawless final race to finish first ahead of Christophe Rizk, and extend his championship lead in the Junior class.

“I slipped out twice on the dirty side of the track and Christophe [Rizk] caught up and put pressure on me in the pre-final race. The fact that Christophe was close behind me shows that it’s not going to be easy in the upcoming rounds.” said Njeim, who comfortably won the final race.

Rizk was satisfied with second place, he said: “In the pre-final race, Christopher made a couple of mistakes so I caught up with him but I couldn’t overtake. In the final race, he put on a new set of tyres, so he managed to pull a comfortable gap.”

Third place went to an ecstatic Rashed Ghanem who started the final race from fourth place before moving past Serge Antypas and fending off heavy pressure from his competitor throughout the race.

He said: “I had a poor pre-final race because of low grip, but I had new tyres on in the final race, so I had better grip and I managed to compete for the final podium spot.”
